Emergency accommodation for evacuees of the Fort McMurray fire was provided at the Edmonton Expo Centre, but that quickly filled up. Hundreds of evacuees were then taken in at the University of Alberta’s Lister Hall and MacEwan University’s student housing.

The majority of evacuees received at the universities arrived destitute, with little resources or support. Most were relative newcomers to Canada, had no supports in the community, and were already suffering from the recession that had hit Fort McMurray.

Because of the level of vulnerability many of these evacuees were experiencing, Emergency Management people from the UofA reached out to C5 for help with supports.

What C5 did

Within two days, C5 mobilized a response at Lister Hall:

Over the May to June 2016 period, C5 served more than 1500 people at Lister Hall and MacEwan University.
